Finding the right Smudging herbs

Herbs have been used for centuries to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Smudging herbs are some of the most potent botanicals regarding spiritual practices. Incense burning was the most ancient aromatherapy practice used worldwide by ancient Egyptian, Roman, Celtic, Maya, Native American, and many other cultures. People worldwide have used these herbs for purification, clearing, smudging, and for spiritual practices like meditation, prayer, and healing work. If you want to incorporate smudging herbs into your spiritual practices, it's nice to know about the herbs you can use to connect to the botanical magic. In this blog post, we'll explore the different smudging herbs and help you find the one that's right for you.

When it comes to choosing the right herbs, there are three critical factors to consider - the smell, the method and the magical properties. The key is to find a balance between the three and choose the herbs that speak to you and your specific needs. An herb's scent can often hint at its properties, but it's essential to research and know its magical uses. As you become more knowledgeable about herbs, you'll understand which ones best suit your intentions. So take your time, smell the different herbs, and trust your intuition. You'll find that the right herbs will choose you just as much as you choose them. In this guide, we will explore the three key factors you need to consider when choosing an herb: scent, intention, and method.

1. Scent

One of the most critical factors in choosing the right herb is determining the type of scent you prefer. Some people prefer earthy scents, while others prefer floral or spicy fragrances. If you are unsure of what kind of scent you are drawn to, consider visiting Sweet Medicine Shop or smelling a few different options.

If you want an earthy scent, consider using cedar or yerba santa. For a floral bouquet, try out lavender or rosemary. Pungent fragrances include sage and yarrow. Ultimately, the right scent will help you feel calm and centered, aiding your spiritual practice.

2. Intention

It's essential to know what you want to achieve when using herbs. Some herbs can help with protection, while others are meant to clear negative energy. Some herbs aid in opening up the mind and heart. When you know what you intend to accomplish, it becomes easier to choose the right herb.

For example, try out lavender, cedar or yarrow if you want love. If you need protection, consider using rosemary, dragon’s blood sage, or sage. Clearing herbs include sage and palo santo while opening herbs include pine lavender and rosemary. Keep your intention in mind when selecting your herb.

3. Method

The method in which you use your herbs is also essential. Some prefer incense sticks, while others find loose smudging herbs or herbal smudge bundles more effective. Incense powder is also an option for those who want something more customizable. Your chosen method is entirely up to you, but consider it before purchasing.

It's important to note that different methods may also require extra tools. Smudge bundles, for example, may need a heat-resistant bowl or shell. Incense sticks require a holder. Be sure to gather all necessary equipment before beginning your spiritual practice. View our blog on how to smudge and smudging practices to discover new methods.

Choosing the perfect herb can be challenging, but by considering scent, intention, and method, you can narrow your selection and ultimately find the herb that suits your needs. Remember to take your time in the selection process and prioritize your needs when choosing your herb. Doing so will create a powerful and personalized spiritual practice that supports your healing and growth.

There's something magical about burning botanical incense and smudging herbs. Not only do they fill your home with a delightful aroma, but they also profoundly impact your mind and body. It's fascinating to learn that plant choice can have a specific purpose too! Roots such as patchouli or vetiver can do the job if you want to ground yourself. For those seeking a spiritual experience, the fragrant flowers of lavender or rose would be perfect. If you need a little boost in energy, a clearing blend of leaves and needles like eucalyptus or sage will do the trick. Lastly, resin or sap-based incense, such as frankincense or myrrh, can transport you to a meditative state. Let's experiment with different botanicals and elevate our senses!

The longer you work with a scent, the more it can transport you to a place of beauty. The scent takes you back to powerful memories in a second. Suddenly, you smell apple pie, and you are back in grandma's kitchen, peppermint or eucalyptus, and you are being cared for by a loved one when you were sick. The memories around scent are some of the most sacred and nostalgic memories I have, and bringing these scents to the city to share with all is my way of continuing to honor the memories and the medicine. I was raised on a farm and close to nature, surrounded by nature and its inherent healing power from a young age. Embody and embrace that connection by amplifying the energy of your surroundings with botanical incense. May it fill you with peace, joy, inspiration, and calm.

These special moments can help us reconnect to our inner selves and regain our balance. I believe in the power of nature to heal and transform us in ways we never thought possible

Growing up on the farm instilled an appreciation of the natural world that I continue to carry today. In my small corner of the woods, I spent many hours learning about herbalism - discovering the therapeutic properties of herbs used for healing, smudging, and incense burning. I remember picking up plants, rubbing them between my fingers, inhaling their fragrances, and feeling connected to the earth's energy.

The farm was laced upon the edges of with desert sagebrush, wild sunflowers, mullein, yarrow, and fresh peppermint growing on the edges of the ditch banks. Utah was full of rich foraging herbs, some of which I still use in my healing practice today. I would turn to herbs for various purposes - smudging and clearing energy, crushing herbs and saps from the trees, burning them as incense to invoke a sense of peace and harmony, or using dried herbs in teas and salves to help heal and bring mental peace. My appreciation for the power of plants was nurtured by my connection with nature growing up.

I am grateful for the time spent learning from nature and its many secrets of healing using herbs. Today, I bring that knowledge into my practice as a healer, combining ancient teachings with modern holistic approaches to create personalized botanical scents and personalized blends for many clients. I'm proud to be able to carry these teachings forward, incorporating the knowledge and wisdom of natural plants and herbs into my everyday life. By doing so, I am honoring the healing power of nature that has been passed down for generations.

The appreciation for the power of plants can become our most powerful ally in times of need. Through learning about herbs and how to use them for healing, we can become better connected to the natural world and find our personalized path to optimal health.
