About 15 million years ago a meteoric impact in southern Germany spread silica projectiles rock across the Moldau river in the Czech Republic. First discovered to in 1786, Moldavite is a forest green, olive green or blue greenish silica projectile rock formed by a meteorite impact.
At the time of the Nordlinger Ries crater impact 14.7 million years ago, splatters of material melted by the impact cooled while airborne and most fell in Bohemia. Moldavite has also been found in an area that includes southern Bohemia, western Moravia, the Cheb Basin, Lusatia (Germany), and Waldviertel (Austria).
Moldavite can be transparent or translucent with mossy green color, swirls, bubbles, or mossy appearance. Museum grade moldavite has distinct fern-like pattern and is more translucent than more common pieces.
Be weary of cut pieces that do not include inclusions or traditional moldavite markings. Fake moldavite tends to have extremely shiny and glossy surfaces without inclusions. When identifying raw moldavite, look for sharp protrusions and protruding lechatelierite needles.
There is a moldavite museum, Muzeum Vltavínů, in Český Krumlov, Czech Republic. The Moldavite Association was established in Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2014. The association researches, exhibits and promotes moldavites and other tektites around the world and has member geologists from more than 30 countries worldwide.
